History and Life of Jaganshi Hiei

Born with a twin to a fire youkai and a koorime (ice maiden), Hiei's life was destined to be eventful. The koorimes lived on a peaceful, floating country of ice. These ice maidens are able to reproduce on their own, there for do not need a spouse, and the Elders forbid it. One koorime in particular had intercourse with a fire youkai (a fire demon). Since koorime usually only have one child, who turns out to be their sort of clone, Hina had two children - Hiei and his twin Yukina. While Hiei turned out to be a fire youkai, Yukina became Hina's clone, a normal koorime. The Elders labeled Hiei the Forbidden Child, ordered him to be cast off Ice country, and dropped to the Makai, a.k.a. demon world, below. Hina was heartbroken and begged that her son be spared; the Elders cared not. They ordered Hina's friend Ruri to toss Hiei over the edge. He was wrapped in straps that would bind his powers. The Elders were frightened that if this child was allowed to stay he would use his powers to destroy all the koorime and Ice Country. Koorime rarely ever cry, but when they do their tears turn into tiny spheres of blue called tear gems. Hina cried violently for Hiei and Ruri took two of her tear gems, gave one to Yukina, and tucked the other into Hiei's wraps. Ruri then took him to a high place on Ice country and held his helpless body over the edge. About the throw him over, Ruri told him to become strong and come back for his revenge. With this said she let go and sent the infant spiraling to the Makai. Somehow Hiei survived the long fall with Ruri's word imprinted on his mind. The little fire youkai was then taken in by a band of thieves. He kept his mother's tear gem on a necklace and he became rather determined to gain strength and do as Ruri told him to. It gave him a reason to go on. As he grew older, Hiei learned to become a master swordsman and fighter. He fought every demon he could and became fond of their cries to help. For a time, he was a hired assassin. When they couldn't take Hiei's negative disposition any longed, the thieves cast him away from their group. Now with no shelter or comfort, Hiei wandered Makai and fought with anyone who crossed his path. Unfortunately, this proved to be bad, as Hiei was fighting another youkai, he lost his tear gem forever. He now had a mission, find his sister and the koorime. He had become strong, an A-Class youkai in fact, but still he needed to know his sister and the race of people who so carelessly cast him away to die. All of his searches proved to be failures and it was obvious that he needed help on this mission. Instead of seeking a companion, Hiei found the Jagan. He then sought out Sigure to implant the Jagan. To implant this third eye with magical properties, the being must endure an extreme amount of pain and suffering involved. Many die during the surgery alone but those who do live end up dying anyway from lose of youki, energy. The evil eye feed on youki, but when it is mastered it gives its inhabitant great potential and power. Even with the warnings of the dangers that came with the implantation, Hiei insisted that Sigure go ahead with it. Sigure agreed and carried through with it reluctantly. In the middle of it, Hiei cried out in terrible pain and anguish. The agony was almost too much to bear. He exerted much of his youki to relieve himself of this torture. The operation was a success but almost at the cost of Hiei's life. He almost spent all of his youki to numb the pain and his strength dwindled from him. Because Hiei was very weak and rather vulnerable, Sigure made him stay an extra day so that he could teach him some swaggerer's techniques. This way he could defend against any attackers in his tired state. With this in mind Hiei began to build new energy. In time, he mastered the Jagan and was able to use its many powers. He would now use it to find Yukina but before he was let go, Sigure made him promise to never tell Yukina Hiei's identity in return for the surgery. He probably had no true intention of telling her anyway. Now equipped with the Jagan, Hiei set off for Ice Country. He used the Jagan's powers to picture the location of Ice Country and journeyed towards it. When he arrived, it became a ghostly town for no one wanted to come across the dreaded fire youkai. Hiei continued to walk further into the land and eventually cam across Ruri, who did not recognize the child she had been ordered to kill. He asked about a child who was condemned and sentenced to be thrown into the Makai. Ruri then led him to the tomb of his mother, Hina. After losing Hiei, she told him, she committed suicide in her grievous state. Ruri then told him that Yukina had gone to search for him, hoping he had survived. Hiei felt that although he could not reveal his true self to her, it was his obligation to find her. As he walked away to go back to Makai, the truth hit Ruri. She realized that this powerful youkai was indeed the helpless, bound infant whom she had cast down to his supposed death. She cried out to him and fell to her knees begging for forgiveness. Hiei just walked on out of Ice Country, for he did not intend to kill any of them. Hiei's search for Yukina brought him to the Ningenkai, or human world. He met Kurama here, but attacked him first, believing him to be an enemy. In the end he realized it was just a misunderstanding, yet he was still badly wounded from their toils. Kurama, being a kind hearted youko, took him to his room and nursed his wounds. Once healed, Hiei and Kurama beat the youkai that truly was Hiei's enemy, together. Kurama had tagged alone because this particular youkai had also kidnapped his friend, Maya. Since their fighting styles blended so well and Kurama seemed to stick around, they became partners and close friends. Hiei then disappeared for a while, but returned to Kurama a year later. He'd come back to convince Kurama to assist him and another; rather burly youkai named Goki, in the Rei Kai robbery. The trio robbed the Orb of Bost, a magical orb that can trap a human's soul, the Forlorn Hope; a mirror able to grant one wish in exchange of a life and a sword capable of ensnaring the soul of anyone or thing it touches and turning them into zombies under the control of the sword's wielder. When Hiei began enslaving ningens a ReiKai Tentai named Yusuke Urameshi was put on the case. He defeated Goki with some extended effort and Kurama gave in peacefully after Yusuke and him used half of their lives for a wish from the Forlorn Hope. Kurama used the wish to save his dying ningen mother. Of course, Hiei was not so easily beaten. He kidnapped Kayko, Yusuke's "girlfriend". Hiei had cut Kayko with the sword and she was becoming a monster under Hiei's command when Yususke arrived. Since Yusuke was furious about what was happening to his good friend, Yusuke thrived off of it and used it to raise his energy level. Botan, Yusuke's sort of instructor, used her healing power to pospone the transformation of Kayko. Hiei had the upper hand once he transformed himself into a green skinned mobster with Jagans all over his body. It wasn't until Kurama showed up and blocked Yusuke from being stabbed, and being stabbed himself, that Hiei lost it. Kurama, wanting t pay Yusuke back for helping him, threw blood into Hiei's real Jagan, which made Hiei lose his power source. Hiei was rendered helpless for only a few moments. That was enough time for Yusuke to move out of Hiei's trap. He quickly recovered and went back for Yusuke with the sword. He had no way to avoid Hiei's advance and was soon going to be killed, so as a last resort he used his Spirit Gun. Hiei dodged it easily but he was too confident. The Spirit Gun bounced off of the Forlorn Hope and came back and hit Hiei in the back. He had lost and the three Rei Kai items were returned; even thought the Forlorn Hope was cracked. Hiei and Kurama were taken in and Kayko was returned to normal along with the rest of the infected ningens. This is where it all began. When Hiei and Kurama were put on probation, their punishment was to help Yusuke and Kazuma Kuwabara as Rei Kai Tentai ((Spirit Detectives)). He joined Kuwabara, Kurama and Yusuke on many missions. The first was to retrieve a special whistle that would stop Makai insects from infecting humans in the Ningenkai. To do this they had to defeat the four Saint Beasts. This is completed as planned and they find a beautiful apparition named Yukina. She was being held by the evil Tarukane and it was their job to save her from his claws. Yukina had no idea who he was when they were face to face. Since he wasn't allowed to tell her, he kept their blood relation to himself. After Sensui's defeat, Hiei received an invitation from Mukuro, which meant he would have to return to the Makai. Before he left, Yukina gave him her tear gem and asked him to find a fire youkai that had one just like it. She told him to tell her brother that his sister is waiting for him. With the gem and his orders he departed for Makai. Once he found Mukuro, she forced him to have a match with her right hand man, Sigure. Whoever won would be her right hand. Hiei and Sigure made a deal that if Hiei won, he could confess to Yukina. Hiei had no interest in becoming Mukuro's right hand so he didn't exactly put all of his heart into the fight. After all, he had accomplished all the goals- to find Yukina and the koorime -so he had no reason to go on. He believed it would be fair if he died in this match. However, Hiei fought Sigure and turned out the victor, barely. He was half-unconscious and badly wounded on his arm and his stomach was sliced. Before he subsided into unconsciousness, Mukuro offered him a white gem but he refused and passed out. She healed him inside of a special tank and confessed her feelings for him while he slept inside.

Hiei has many different abilities. He is a master swordsman and his preferred weapon is a katana, a Japanese long-handled sword. He also possesses incredible strength, speed and agility. These hardly compare to other attacks he can pull off. The Jagan gives him a great advantage. With it he can control weak-minded ningens and youkai, send telepathic messages and move objects telekinetically. When needed, Hiei can boost his strength by forming Jagans all over his body and he turns into a green-skinned monster. Hiei is also able to manipulate dark Makai fire into either, a sword or so that it surrounds his fists as he pounds his challengers. Perhaps the most threatening though is the Black Dragon named Kokuryuuha. This attack uses very much of his youki but is practically invincible. This dragon is summoned from the dark world and uses Hiei's youki to come to the Ningenkai. Once unleashed, his power is terrible and unlimited, but it leaves Hiei drained and tired. When the dragon is dormant, it is merely a black dragon tatoo coursing up Hiei's right arm. He keeps it under bandages as he keeps his Jagan under a white bandana.

Hiei is fiercely independent and mostly pursues his own agenda. His raw ambition drives him and strictly adheres to his own code of honor. He cares little for humans and views them as obstacles in his constant pursuit of power and his own goals. When someone does manage to gain his respect, ((i.e. Kurama)) he remains fiercely loyal to him or her.
